SKE48 top member Suda Akari released her first first solo photo book "Kawaikunaru hoho" on 22 August 2018. Did it sell well? The answer is no, according to Japanese media DAILY SHINCO.

As AKB48's top member, the publisher expected high from her fans and printed 50,000 copies, but the sales was significantly below expectation, the photo book sold 8,600 copies in first 3 weeks (Note: According to Suda Akari's Tweet, the sales is over 10,000 copies in 6 weeks).

DAILY SHINCO also list other AKB48 group top members' photobook for comparison:

  • The 10th AKB48 General Election 1st place winner Matsui Jurina's 1st photo book "Jurina" (2015) sold approximately 22,000 copies (22,136 copies) in first week.
  • The 10th AKB48 General Election 3rd place winner Miyawaki Sakura's 1st photo book "Sakura" (2015) sold approximately 34,000 copies (34,097 copies) in first week.

I don't see the point of the article, other than to insult/hurt Suda. Obviously, she and the publishers knew the sales, but I don't know that anyone else cared.

When it comes to photobook, it's the matter of visual tbh. Dasu's visual is not appreciated in Japan's standard. There's some top members who didn't sell that good as well, while Kojiharu who never ranked higher than 6 was the best seller.

It’s because SSK votes doesn’t mean how many fans you have; it’s just about how rich your fans are.

Yeah. And SSK is not some magic wand that will automatically grant a girl success and fame.

Sorry but that publisher is an idiot. If members with a longtime proven, broad and established fanbase sell below 35K who in his right mind would think about printing 50K books on the first print?

If anything I think Suda's book sell perfectley average for a 1st time photobook.

for a photobook to sell a lot you have to be known for your looks like Shiraishi Mai,Nagahama Neru,Yoshida Akari or Kojima Haruna since not only fans buy photobooks but a lot of girls who like them as fashion inspirations

while dasu has fans and is very popular she's not known for her looks

I always asked myself, who is that girl who is always in the top 5? Whoever voted for her every year has a lot of money...

Nogizaka photobooks sell well because the other gravure they do in magazines and manga is so boring. Photobooks are the only place that Nogizaka/Keyaki girls do bikini/lingerie whereas 48 group girls do that in many magazines so their photobooks are not unique.
