Good news to Vietnam's AKB48 and idol fans, AKB48 announced the formation of a new international sister group based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam called SGO48 (stands for Saigon 48), the group's color represents Vietnamese National flower "Lotus". The latest offshoot will mark the 7th group based in a city outside Japan, after Jakarta's JKT48, Bangkok's BNK48, Taipei's TPE48, China's TeamSH, Manila's MNL48 and Mumbai's MUM48.

SGO48 will start recruiting first generation members in July 2018, and reveal the results before the end of 2018. The new sister group will be managed by YAG Entertainment.

I knew it! When they announced BNK and MNL I knew a Vietnam sister group is coming soon (the only unexpected one is MUM lol), but it's not HCM? SGO, Saigon?

Making more idol groups will be counter productive. AKB48 is already popular in Vietnam. Making a new idol group there will just lose fans for AKB48. After SNH rebelled and declared independence you would think that AkiP would think twice before making more groups. These foreign groups will simply water down the AKB brand. There are already too many branches on the AKB tree. It needs a good trimming, not more branches.

From personal experience, I'd advise them against doing business in Vietnam. You pretty much have to bribe everyone to get anything done, and even then, it takes ages for their civil workers to finish paperwork.

@Elvin: was it really that bad there? How about the respond, are people hyping on the news? I'm aware the condition in JKT is not good (lack of popularity and sales due to piracy) and TPE is facing financial issue (might be lack of popularity too so no sponsor want to invest on them) also MNL is known to be problematic (thanks to the audition), so far BNK is probably the most successful (don't count SNH) overseas sister group.

Thank you for your comment, but, would you mind re-post your comments? I think many overseas AKB48 fans really interested in Vientam, but I find it may be a bit too sensitive about politic part.

(Sorry if this is a double post, I'm not sure if my first one went through)
@Paul Yeah I was thinking that as well. I said I don't like generalizing an entire country but I ended up doing it anyway.
I met a lot of great people in the short time I was there.
I hope it does work out. There are a lot of cute girls there.
Putting aside my personal experiences and looking at it from another angle, I know they love their music in Vietnam (there was always something playing in the background when I was hitting the streets during my time there), but I'm not sure that they have enough variety shows to really sell their members.
Also, they make about $150 USD a month on average, so if they ever hold a SSK like SNH and JKT did, I doubt there'll be many fans who can go crazy with their votes.

Here's a crazy idea. Wait for it.

    Wait for it.

or perhaps WUS48 for Western United States48.

The chances of this ever happening, even with all the sister groups being made currently, I wouldn't see this happening for a LONG time.

But if they did, I bet my left hand many of us on the east coast would be packing our bags by now.

@Elvin: I saw a lot of 48G vids with Viet Sub since long time ago, I thought it might work. Cmiiw but Indonesian also make around $150-250 a month, the singles were sold with fans' income in consideration so for JKT single it was around $4-6

It's considerate to lower the price for their fans, but you mentioned that JKT wasn't doing that well, so we can't really say "it worked in Indonesia so it should work in Vietnam."
I mentioned it in a now deleted post, but they'll have to jump through a few hoops to make it work.

@Elvin: well yeah I said JKT is not doing well because there's a little interest in Jpop in Indonesia which is a country with population of 262M but their latest senbatsu garnered roughly 600k votes so that's quite good, their main issue is piracy culture where casual listener illegally download their song which caused them a lot of loss. JKT is very active, they make a different system called JKT48 Academy where kks are divided to class A and B based on their performance and will be promoted to class A or Team, they also have subunit like JKT Acoustic JKT Band JKT Dangdut, they have a good amount of cfs, featured in TV and drama for reality show or movie. One of the member Yupi aka Cindy Yuvia caused a buzz after their performance in Thailand and thanks to that BNK fans are paying attention to JKT too.

Idk about the political situation in Vietnam, my question is, how does the people there react to this news? Bc as long as there's demand then it may work.
