It shouldn’t surprise any fans that Hinatazaka46's first single Kyun tops ORION Weekly Chart, but the figures released by ORICON are staggering nonetheless.

Kyun sold 476,000 copies last week, making Hinatazaka46's Kyun not just the best-selling first single in AKB48 group and Sakamichi 46 series' history, but in Japanese female artists' history.

Note from ORICON: Hinatazaka46 released their debut album "Hashiridasu Shunkan" under the name of Hiragana Keyakizaka46 in June 2018.

It's a good song, so not surprising. A-single can be either a hit or miss and album summarize all singles and new songs. Harder to sell albums than singles.

Morning Musume's 3rd Love Paradise and AKB48's second (shipped), third and fourth album (sold to consumers) are the only idol group albums which have sold more than a million copies.

Morning Musume's Best still holds the record with 2.2M copies in lifetime.

However, AKB48 and Keyaki are the first idol groups to blew up quick with first album. It just shows how hard it is when Nogi has already released three albums but only reached 429k for the third album. They have had a steady climb but very slow. I haven't looked up the history of albums in Japan yet as I think there are artists and band (X) who achieved million from RIAJ. X's Jealousy comes to mind.

The key for albums is to have very popular singles which makes fans flock to it. That has always been my impression from albums that do well. Even if people have said AKB48's albums have declined next album can easily climb up again due to singles being popular like the third album. You can't predict the market, there will always be up and downs for any group.
