Do you know why Oricon and Billboard have different numbers ? Billboard reported that AKB sold 1.4M+

    Mayu, not May.

@Nana: its because Oricon no longer count ppl who bought the single in bulk. So if someone bought 20+ they only count 20, the remaining won't be count

It is also because Oricon doesn't count exported sales, digital sales while billboard does.
The truth is somewhere between the two.

You have to take into account that most Akimoto lead group sales are super bloated. People don't buy the CD for the CD. They buy it for the photo, chance to vote for akb top 100 songs, chance to vote in ssk, chance to go to handshake events, etc. Also there are usually 10 version of the CD, so some hardcore fan will buy type A B C D, A limited, B limited, C, limited, D limited AND theater version to collect them all (like pokemon). So if you can count HOW MANY PERSON is buying CDs instead of HOW MANY CD is sold, AKB might not even hit 1M.

This 50th single comes with some limited edition event ticket. I'm sure the fans that are in Japan or going to Japan will want this event ticket more than the CD itself.

All other artists and idol group dont really sell CD this way, so you won't get 1 fan buying bulk orders of 5 or more CD. So I like that Oricon does their count this way, but at a limit of 20 copies per person... I still think that is too much.

A sales a sale in my opinion. If they put it out and someone buys it that should count.

If you don't want to count all of akbs sales because people might not be buying the cd purely for the music then you really wouldn't be able to count cds bought as gifts or cds bought for collections or cds bought for promotion either or any other random ulterior motive. It would lower all numbers across the board for everyone.
